Hi, Blog!
It's already September. Anyway, I just got back from my island trip to one of the most beautiful islands, Perhentian Island in Terengganu. This is my first trip to this tropical island with very smooth white sandy beaches and clear blue waters with abundance of colorful and playful fishes. A perfect weekend getaway for some relaxing and splash in the sun. We depart on Saturday, 27 August 2016 and we stayed for 3 days and 2 nights.
There are two Perhentian islands, big and small, not far apart from each other. Perhentian Besar (big) is supposed to be less developed and crowded but more expensive with mostly resorts and fancy restaurants. For this reason we chose Perhentian Kecil (small).

How to get there
We took bus from Hentian Kajang bus station and straight to Kuala Besut. The bus will stop just a stone away from the jetty Kuala Besut since there are new bus station has exist and you have to walk for 15 minutes. We arrived early morning, had prayer at mosque opposite of the jetty and early breakfast, Nasi Dagang for the win at the stall nearby. Haha.

Not to forget, buy as much foods as you can just in case you're hungry at the middle of the night / before the lunch time (we took a package of accommodation + snorkeling + food + speed boat ticket, thus we no need to worry) since foods sold at island are way too expensive. Teh o ais is MY5. Hahaha.
Arrived at the jetty, and our arrival are welcomed by the chalet's person in charge. We are in a speed boat of 20 person. Before that, you need to pay for MYR5 at the jetty before entering the island.
Accommodation at Small Perhentian Island
So, we went to Perhentian Kecil since there are more budget accommodations there and also since the most beautiful beach and spot for swimming in Perhentian Island is also located there, Long Beach. Below is the picture of view from our chalet... Ahhhh perfect!
We stayed at Mohsin Chalet, located on the hill (not so hill, the hill side actually hihi) a nice place with a beach view. Here, you have two options, to stay in a room with fan or with air-conditioner. We pay for MYR400 for 3days stayed, 5 points snorkeling trip and foods (breakfast, lunch & dinner). Mind that, there are no wi-fi, electricity after 5pm (off at 10.30am), cold shower and lizards. Hahaha. The place is quite basic but cheap and clean. The owner is a very nice and helpful person as well as his staff. They are friendly.
What to do at Perhentian Island
(1) Hiking.
You can go for hiking to the windmill. Just follow the track. We go for hiking on day 1, in the evening. The first half hour is mainly a steady climb up to the generators - a narrow jungle path in some areas, a heavily eroded track towards the top. Slopes are mainly moderate but there are a few short steep pinches. Careful. Make sure wear proper shoes. We just wear sandals. Haha. There are also a very nice observation platform of which you can just see part at left of shot. There is a fantastic stairway which runs from this platform way down to the sea on the upper left coast. Too tired to get down. So, we stop at the half of the staircase.

(2) Snorkeling
We went for snorkeling on day 2. Early in the morning, right after breakfast around 10 am. Two boats from our chalet. Looks like there are lots of tourist stay at the chalet. You will be given the mask and fins. If you wish to use it right after snorkeling trip, you can rent a mask and fins on the beach for MYR5 Ringgit for the day. Snorkeling was very good just wear rush vest or put a lot of sunblocks. There are 5 points altogether. Some said 6, but our package is for 5 points only.

During the snorkeling, we managed to saw two grey tip sharks, many bumphead parrot fish, four dotted stingrays, nemo-fish, many needle fish, couple barracudas, big schools of parrot fish, yellow box fish, titan triggerfish, many clown fish, sea cucumbers, huge schools of small silver fish. I only got the chance to saw one turtle only. This is sad.
Not to forget, you have to bring your own money during the snorkeling trip since you will had your lunch at perkampungan nelayan (not included on the package, only one day lunch). The snorkeling trip will takes around 6 hours. 10 - 4pm.

(3) Kayaking
Sad thing, we didn't have the guts to go for kayaking. Maybe next time, when we decide to stay for one week? Hahaha

Food on Perhentian Island
Of course food on the island is more expensive than on the mainland. In cafes for a meal you will pay from 5 to 30 Ringgit depends what you eat and where. Simple Pattaya Fried Rice will cost you MYR8 and Teh O Ais, MYR5. Hahaha. Roti Canai, MYR 2 per pieces. Expensive by MYR1. Well, everything for 1-2 Ringgit more expensive.
Okay that's all for my accommodation this time around. I really really recommend this chalet since its a perfect example of the term "value for money" and familiar among backpackers. You can just Google "Mohsin Chalet" to book your rooms.
End of trip.
